Vintage Creek
As a tourist in New South Wales you don’t have to spend all your time in Sydney sightseeing. There are plenty of exciting ways to explore and celebrate Australia’s indigenous culture. You can learn about the traditional secrets of bush tucker, bush medicines hunting and dancing. A taste of the ancient Australia!
For example, in the Western Sydney area you can learn about the Dharug Nation’s tribal homeland. Although the area is now densely populated, you may be surprised to learn about the unique history and language that was once used by this remarkable aboriginal tribe. On a specially guided tour you will be able to witness the unique dance routines and view amazing cave paintings and rock engravings from thousands of years ago.
A visit here will give you a unique insight into a part of Australia’s history that has been largely ignored until government funding contributed to the preservation and display of these amazing artefacts.
Exploring a little further afield might take you into western New South Wales and then further north into the Northern Territory. Here, you will be with the Warumungu and Alyawarra people from Epenarra, near Tennant Creek
Imagine hunting, collecting and preparing bush tucker in the desert heat. Witness how these ancient people hunted and tracked big red kangaroos and spiny echidna. If you are really game, you can also enjoy a bush harvest and taste the specialties like witchetty grubs and even some bush coconuts. It is something you will never forget.
The Northern Territory town of Alice Springs is the centre of land occupied by the Arrernte people. In this modern outback town you will be able to see the best of the new and the old all in one easily accessible location. The Centre of Australia is synonymous with Australia’s aboriginal heritage and you will not be surprised to learn that it is the centre of aboriginal desert art. It is also a touch point for Australia’s early exploration attempts. There are many tours that allow you to sit around a campfire and enjoy a lecture on the southern skies with an aboriginal interpretation.
One of the most moving experiences you are likely to have is on a visit to the Hermannsburg Community and Mission.
This is one of the few places where you can share stories with an aboriginal guide who will take you round the park as you visit three famous desert habitats. The Desert Rivers, the sand country and woodlands. You will learn about the unique features of each of these habitats and discover how aboriginal tribes survived in this apparently harsh location.
Further north at the Uluru National Park you will see recent endeavours by aboriginal people who are attempting to establish self-sustaining farms with the assistance of the CSIRO. You will cross some of the oldest rivers in the world before stopping to take some stunning photographs of unusual mountains and the huge salt lake at Kalamurta.
This is just a small sampling of the many things you can see on guided Australian day tours. The sights are in stark contrast to the otherwise modern eastern seaboard of Australia.
