Why would you need 2 speeds on a fishing reel?
I wanna buy a penn international but don't understand these speed things like 1 speed or 2 speed. I wanna get a 10-12t but the 1 speed is way cheaper than a 2 speed but why is that? Do you really need 2 speeds? More parts=more things to break And do you guys like Pelagic reels? Cause I found some guy who's selling for spinning reels for 125$ is it work to buy them it's the zf 3000, 2 sr200s and 1 zr 100. Is it worth getting em
You need two speeds on a reel for the same reason a bike needs more than one speed. With relatively low line strengths (up to maybe 30 or 40 pound line), there's no need for a lower gear because you can crank with all the tension the line can handle, even with a 4 to 1 gear ratio. But with reels made for heavy line, a higher gear ratio means it's virtually impossible to gain line when there's substantial tension on the line. (That's like trying to pedal a bike up the hill in high gear.) In the old days, big game reels came with horribly low gear ratios (like 1.5 to 1) so you were able to do the serious pulling. But that meant that it took forever to bring in line if the fish charged the boat or was coming in easily, or to just bring in your line with no fish (or a small fish) on it. Being able to switch speeds while playing a big fish really shortens the time it takes to land it, and the less time a hooked fish is in the water, the less chance of something else going wrong (knot slipping, hook straightening or slipping out, abrasion on the line, etc.) which can let the fish get away. The shorter fight also means it's much easier on the fisherman. Anyway, two speeds are more expensive simply because there are many more parts. Most 2-speeds are well made, so there's no worries about them breaking down. If you're serious about going after bigger fish (50-100 pound average or bigger) a two-speed is the way to go.
