What is “e-glass” when it comes to fishing rods?

Is e-glass just another term for fiberglass when it comes to fishing rods? I see the term “e-glass” thrown around all the time in the various fishing catalogs and online tackle shops but no one ever explains what e-glass is.
For that matter, what is “s-glass”?

Back in the 1980s, they (Fenwick) started marketing saltwater rods made of “S” glass, which were lighter for basically the same action as the traditional “E” glass rods. They were lighter since there was less glass in them, and they did seem to have about the same strength/action as the older rods — unfortunately, they were not as durable otherwise, and a little “ding” could create a weak spot where they would break when under stress. After a few years (and with the advent of graphite), I stopped hearing ads about “S” glass.

So basically, “E” glass is your basic sturdy fiberglass for fishing rods, “S” is a lighter, stiffer material. If you want a light, stiff rod, you’re probably better off with graphite.
