Fly fishing fly cycle……………………….?
I think Im finally getting it . Please correct me If wrong . say I was fishing a hendrickson fly and I was fishing in the morning i would start by fishing a nymth , then If thats not working I would fish an emerger, then I can switch in the afternoon to Dun and then spinners in the evening . correct If wrong please . Also can I fish a nymth anytime ? Also what is the proper way to fish a spinner , just like a dry fly right . thnaks for your time
You have the basic idea, but it really depends more on what’s happening, than the time of day, although the time of day usually does determine whats happening-
Usually, early before the hatch actually happens, you start off with the nymph, and you’ll fish that until you start seeing rises. that is usually when the emergers are starting to come to the surface, but you don’t yet see the duns (adults). fish the nymphs or emergers til the duns start appearing, then switch to the dry flies. Fish those until a spinner fall occurs. this can be silmutaneous, or towards the end of the hatch.

Yes, you can fish the nymph anytime, but it may not be the best choice at the moment, although you will be fishing it the most. pay attention to what the fish seem to be eating, and know that they can become selective to any one stage- not just all the fish, but certain fish, so you may have to try each of the flies til you figure it out.
The proper way to fish the spinner is dead drift, as a dry.
A lot of times, the spinner may not float properly- the heaviest part of the hook is the bend, and it may sink, giving the fly a down hanging appearance. You can beat this by tying your spinners on the hook backwards- then the greater floatation of the wings will be over the hook bend and can help prevent this.
