Is there a time of year to use stink baits for catfish?
I’ve tried using it several times and several different types and brands, but never had luck. I’d love to catch more cat’s but it seems like i only catch them while casting for bass with crank baits or Rubber worms/lizards. I’ve also tried Cut bait and had some results. Also if you have any opinions on chumming for cat’s please I’d love to hear it.
alot of people have the common misconception that catfish prefer dead rotting stuff when it comes to bait. the fact of the matter is, since catfish live in murky waters, they use their sense of smell to find food. now they will eat the stinkbaits for that reason alone, since they exude so much odor.
next time you go out, try using dead, but still fresh, bait. basically any kind of meat works, but i do the best with chicken livers. they have a nice odor to them, and theyre covered in blood, which adds even more scent into the water. Also pieces of raw pork work pretty well.
as far as chumming goes, i know people who will put whatever their chumming with into a crawdad pot, and throw that into the river and fish for cats around the pot. that way the meat in the pot doesn’t go to waste since the fish cant gobble it up, and they’ll have to go to the meat on your hook. plus you get crawdads! oh and it may be important to add that if you are chumming, make sure you match the bait on your hook to the bait in the chum.
oh and to be more direct with your actual question, the best time to use the stinkbaits if you are gonna use em are when the water is at is absolute slowest, i.e. in the middle of the summer, and they normally do better in the middle of the night.
