how does my bearded dragon lightning sound?
I have a 4 ft vivarium with a 36″ uv tube 30 watt.. with a ARCADIA LIGHT STARTER 25-30 WATT to hold the uv light obviously.
and i have a reptile light fitting ceramic lamp fitting komodo and a Ceramic Heat Bulb 100W and a Exo Terra Dial Reptile Thermometer…
that’s all i have so far, i have a few questions:
do i need a thermostat?
is my lightning okay?
i no i need, vitamins, food, shavings, food and water bowl, plants and rocks..anything else?
i have wanted a bearded dragon for a year now and i finally brought the vivarium and lightning.. im just confused if i need anything else? thanks.
Okay…Your fl tube is an Arcadia? Great. But you need a basking bulb. From what I understand, you have only a ceramic heat emitter? It needs to be an actual light bulb. Dragons are diurnal and like a bright, white basking light. And the white light constricts their pupils so that their eyes do not get overexposed to the UVB. It can be just a regular household bulb. You’ll probably need to play around with different wattages to see which one gets your temps just right.
You can use the CHE at night IF your temps drop to below 60F. Otherwise, you don’t even need a heat source at night.
The dial thermometer is junk, sorry to say. They can be off up to 20 degrees and don’t measure in the right place. You need a digital therm with a probe and the probe goes directly on the basking spot. This temp should be 100-110F (37-43C). The cool side should stay around 80F (25.5-28C).
You don’t need a thermostat. Control the temps by using lower/higher wattage bulb and moving the lamp closer/further away from the basking spot.
Don’t bother with any type of shavings or sand. Any substrate made of particles poses an impaction risk, especially for babies. Stick with a solid substrate like paper towels, non-adhesive shelf liner, repticarpet or tiles. Tiles are great. You only have to buy them once. They are super easy to clean and disinfect. They come in a lot of colors and styles so you can customize your look. They also help keep beardie’s nails filed down.
