Can catfish be caught with lures?

I saw a big bullhead dried up on the beach with an old banged up rapala in it’s mouth. I’ve never seen a cat taken with lures before, so what happened here?

Also
I was walking around our community pond and there was a bed of weeds floating on the surface. i walked past it and there was a giant fish that splashed up and swam away. what was it?

There are carp, Koi, largemouth, channels, bullheads, panfish and perch.

Well you put a lure resembling a shad or minnow in front of a fish they will more than likely take a hit at it. Ive caught many catfish when throwing lures and plastic while bass fishing. Its rare but it does happen. The natural instinct of a hungry or even not a hungry fish is to at least take a stab at it. With this said you dont want to go out and start throwing lures at cats, its not going to work out well. Stick to your normal catfishing baits.

As to what kind of fish you seen its hard to say without a general description. If it was a “giant” my guess is that it was probably a carp. Durring the warmer months big carp tend to hangout right on the surface sucking down bugs and what not although Catfish will also occasionally come up and go for a bug or 2.
