While fishing for catfish do you want to cast out in the open water or closer to shore?

i know what to use for bait and what time to go i just need to know whether to cast out far or near the shore

if you are fishing in a river, cast into the deeper water on the outside of the bends in the river.
in a lake, find where a creek or river channel comes close enough to reach. if you have any streams entering the lake, those would br prime spots. especially during rain with rising, muddy water.
