what fish would eat these flys?
hi i live in new york and i have a house in Pennsylvania . i just started fly fishing…. and im wondering what fish would eat each of these flys… these are my top flys
irresistible adams.
dark brow elk hair caddis dry
green drake
black ant
red quill
wolly bugger
Any fish that feeds on the surface will hit those flies if the conditions are right. So, assuming you’re fishing lakes and streams, trout (of all varieties), bass, panfish, and perch will take the surface flies you’ve included here.
The only one that “doesn’t belong” with the others is the Woolly Bugger, which is a subsurface fly that imitates baitfish, sculpin, crawfish, or other underwater forage. But again, most any fish you can think of will take a Woolly Bugger if you present it properly to a feeding fish.
Irresistible Adams — This imitates a mayfly or similar aquatic insect. It rides high on the water and is great for moderate to fast water. The game fish I’ve mentioned above will take mayflies from the surface during hatches.
Elk Hair Caddis — Imitates an adult caddisfly (basically an aquatic moth), and can also be used to imitate terrestrial insects such as hoppers, moths, and butterflies.
Green Drake — This fly imitates the big, ugly aquatic insect of the same name. They look kinda like a mayfly that has taken too many body building supplements. They emerge in waves and get enthusiastically eaten by feeding fish.
Black Ant — This is just what it sounds like — it imitates an ant that has fallen in the water. Not really a go-to fly like the Adams, but if you’re fishing an area where terrestrials get blown or knocked into the water, it can be useful.
Red Quill — This imitates a particular kind of mayfly that has tan wings and a ruddy-colored body. While you could use it as a generic mayfly, you’ll probably want to use it during red quill hatches, which I believe take place in spring.
