Your career is like a car. Once in a while it will get stuck in a rut and you are going to have to take extra steps to get it moving again. Just as no one ever deliberately drives into a rut, no one willingly lets their career get stuck. The difference is that it’s easy to know when your car is stuck but not so easy to understand that your career is. Getting into a career rut is an insidious process and if you are not careful you may get into a hole you can’t escape from. So how you know if that is happening to you? Here are a few signs to look out for.

• Are you bored? Is getting into the office a pain? Do you have one small thing in a day that is important to you and everything else just a way of killing time till then?
• Do you remember the time when the thought of getting to work and meeting all the challenges gave you a high? Can you even remember when you last felt like that?
• Is doing your work becoming more difficult? Is your backlog piling up and are you missing deadlines? When you look at the pile of pending work, do you take hours even deciding where to start?
• Are you avoiding socializing with your co workers? Is seeing your colleagues all week getting on your nerves? Would you rather stay home, and perhaps do nothing (and get really bored) than spend time with them outside office as you used to earlier?
• There was a time when missing work got you all tensed up. Today you look forward to an excuse not to go in to office and what happens when you do go back doesn’t concern you half as much. Was there a time you would work over lunch just to keep up? Now you couldn’t be bothered and just want to eat; and that too without much enjoyment?
• And what about you’re away from work interests and hobbies? Are they less interesting to you than they were? Could it be because your interest in your work caused you to take refreshing your mind and body more seriously so you could be more efficient?

If you suffer from even half of the above symptoms, you are in a rut. And that means you are not as efficient as you used to be and your contribution and creativity has dropped. And that’s bad for your career. Sooner or later you will become an outsider in your organization. Once that happens it’s even harder to get back on track. Not only will people avoid you, they will avoid giving you work and will not have any faith in the work you are able to do.
