Black Eagle
Looking at the German flag, you may wonder about the story behind the black, red and gold. Indeed, it is filled with culture and tradition. The flag itself conveys a rich German history and the colors portray a certain pride for the German people.
The flag was first used in 1848 by the Frankfurt Parliament which aimed to unite all German feudal states. However, due to political reasons, the flag was dropped after a change in government and it only reemerged during the rise of the Weimar Republic after World War I. Unfortunately, it will be consequently changed by the Nazi regime and brought back again after World War II. During the division of the country to East Germany and West Germany, the former used a flag with a coat of arms in the middle. But with the reunification of the two sides, the country adopted only the tricolored flag to represent the nation.
Then the Germans officially call their flag as Bundesflagge (federal flag). It is also often called as Deutschlandfahne (Germany flag). Based on its colors, it can also be called as Schwarz-Rot-Gold (black, red and gold). However, the government flag differs slightly with the inclusion of the Bundesschild (federal shield), a version of the coat of arms of Germany.
Finally, the three colors represent the flag of the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, a medieval empire confined to Germany. It is composed of a golden field where a black eagle with red claws can be found.
