How do I thoroughly clean AND sterilize Spanish Moss?
We collected a good amount of Spanish Moss from a dying tree to use decoratively in our plants on the lanai. My Aunt mentioned that there is some kind of process one MUST go through to properly clean and sanitize it before bringing it in to the house. Since I saw a handful in a plastic bag for $5.99 at Home Depot, I figured it’d be better to collect it naturally. The florists use it a lot in their dish gardens so you don’t see the individual pots. Thanks for your help!

“Spanish moss is sometimes bought for use in arts and crafts, or for beddings for flower gardens. The plant is commonly believed to be a habitat for chiggers, but only collects the mites after it has touched the ground. Spanish moss in its natural habitat, hanging from trees, does not harbor chiggers.”
I thought it must be something like this, because I have collected and used Spanish Moss for my container plants many times without a problem.
I suppose there could be the fear that the moss is still alive, and hence able to grow up and choke the plant. I used the moss instead of mulch, and it never seemed to grow at all. Besides, remember how easy it is to pull off if you ever do encounter a problem
