Will Magnesium Bend or Snap?
My fiancee has a fishing reel that is magnesium. Most are Aluminum, so that is why we are trying to figure out if it will bend like aluminum, or snap.
I thought this was an interesting question so I looked up the stress – strain curve for Magnesium.
So, the simple answer is that magnesium will bend a little and spring back, if it is bent a little more it will bend, then if it is bent some more it will break. – But then, that applies to just about everything, one way or the other.
So, let’s talk about this in comparison to Aluminum. Fishing reels whether Aluminum or Magnesium are made from a alloy of those metals, not pure material to improve their performance. Essentially, for your purposes there are 3 factors for performance.
1) The yield strength – this is the maximum amount of pressure that can be applied to the material before it bends and stays bent.
2) The ultimate strength – or once it is bent how much can it still takes before it breaks.
3) The amount of strain before plastic deformation – how much will it flex before it bends and stays bent.
Again, the simple answer is that for item 1 and 2 a good Aluminum alloy can take something like 2x what a good Magnesium alloy can take. For the 3rd item, the amount they will physically bend before they stay bent is about the same.
So, to answer your question specifically, the Magnesium will bend about the same amount as the Aluminum it will just be easier to bend it. Now, don’t get me wrong, Magnesium alloys are pretty strong, it is just not as strong as Aluminum.
