Golf is a testing game; it tests both our mental and physical attributes as well as our golfing skill. All three must be clicking together in order for you to have a perfect game. To outsiders it may seem silly or reading too much into the game but ask any golfer if you’re not prepared mentally then you could have the worst game of your life.
The right mindset is important in golf as factors like stress and frustration can turn one bad shot into many and ultimately a bad 18 holes. If you see professional golfers play you’ll see them occasionally hook a shot into the rough or land one in the fairway bunkers, watch how they react: they will normally show a little sign of disappointment but very rarely will you see that this one errant shot has made them lose it.
Keeping calm and trusting in your golfing skill are what should be going through your head, as well as knowing that this is just one hole of many, eighteen to be precise. Even during major tournaments you will see experienced players such as Tiger Woods drop many shots only to have the mental resolve to mount a triumphant comeback on the back 9. How do they do this though? How do the Professionals keep their cool under the global spotlight and multiple TV cameras? Well knowing a few simple exercises can help reduce your stress level and bring you back to a more focussed and determined mindset.
The pressures of a tournament or even competition between friends can raise your pulse and get you hot and bothered, this is where you can lose your cool and start taking reckless shots and losing interest in what should be an enjoyable game. Breathing slowly and deeply will help lower your heart rate to a more relaxed one. This way you should be calmer when taking shots and are much more likely to hit a perfect shot. Keeping yourself hydrated whilst on the course is important especially if the weather is hot and sunny.
If you look at any pro golfer they all have their strengths; some may be powerful drivers, some may have excellent putting control, quite often you will hear commentators on the TV talking about how player X has a great short game and other similar comments. Every golfer has aspects of their game that they are good at and so you should always use this to your advantage.
If you find your tee shots are accurate and fly straight then you can play holes with narrow fairways with confidence using your driver. For those who find they have better control with a wedge or irons then using these instead and taking an extra shot to get to the green may be better than a poor driver shot and multiple rescue shots.
A golf tutor can identify any strengths in your game and whilst you’re still learning other techniques don’t be afraid to use your strengths to get an advantage on the course. In no time at all you should begin hitting par and even a few birdies which shall help lower your handicap significantly!
